Pet Dragon Info:
I male Rankin called Button. 16 months old, Sadly passed away.
1 Blood red rainbow 1/2 cross Bearded Dragon called Solar 2 years old.(Male)Sadly passed away.
1 Bearded Dragon called Lunar 3 years old. Male!
I bearded dragon called Nando 2 year old Female
1 old Ginger Tom cat called Cookie.16 years.
I took Solar and Lunar my beardies to the vets for a check up in December. They were in perfect health though we were worried about 2 small growths on Lunars back and tail (just where it joins her body). The vet had a look and took some photos of them and told me to keep an eye on them, any changes to take her back.
The one on her back was probably a damaged scale as it disappeared when she shed.

Yesterday I bathed Lunar and the skin on her tail shed shortly after but the growth was still there and looked a funny colour.
I kept an eye on it today and noticed after she'd been running around her tank it was bleeding quite a bit. It seemed to take ages to stop but when it did I covered it in Germolene.
I rang the vets and they could fit me in this evening.
The vet had a look at it and we decided between us that she should remove it tomorrow morning under anaesthetic.
Poor little Lunar has to stay at the vets tonight.
She is going to send the growth to be analysed to see what it is.
Before I left her I opened the pet carrier and Lunar jumped out onto my shoulder for a cuddle. It was as if she knew I was leaving her.
I just hope she will be alright.

Hi Catherine.
Thank you so much for your prayers for Lunar.
Just got back from the vets with her. She's had the growth removed and its gone to the lab to be analysed.
The vet thinks it's probably an abscess as she said it was quite nasty to remove. She has about 4 stitches which have to stay in for 4-6 weeks depending on how it heals.
She was so cute when Siuna the vet brought her in to me. As soon as she heard my voice her little head popped up to look for me and when I picked her up she snuggled into my neck.

She looks very stressed at the moment and is just starting to warm up now from the car journey.
She's not impressed by any of it especially her tank which just has paper towel on the bottom and her basking log and rock. All the decorations have been removed so she can't rub her stitches against anything.
She just took 4 small locust from me and had a drink of water from a syringe so she must be ok.
We have to wait now for the results then we will know what we're dealing with.
She's got antibiotics and some iodine to clean it with. Not looking foreward to the morning when I have to clean it as she doesn't like being messed about with.
I will post a photo when I can get one, its a very neat wound.

Lunar is doing absolutely brilliant following her operation on friday.
She's eating small amounts, drinking 1ml of water every four hours, (she lost a lot of serous fluid from her wound on friday night) and last night she pooped in her water dish.
She sits very still when I clean her wound and licks her antibiotics from the syringe.
I am so proud of her.
I've had to wrap and tape a soft towel around her log so she can't scratch her wound and she just sits on the towel watching the tv and everything going on around her.
Just waiting for the results of the growth now to see what it was and then back to the vets for a check up when the results are in.

Hi Terri,

I was just catching up on some posts and came across this. I'm sorry to hear Lunar is having this problem. Growths in the tail are not uncommon and they generally respond quite well to surgery in that area.

Have you had the pathology results yet?

Best regards,
Mark

Hi Mark.
We are still waiting for the results but the vet said probably tuesday or wednesday.
She is doing really well. The wound site is very clean with no oozing or bleeding. I just clean it daily with iodine solution.
It is just where her tail meets her body so was quite an awkward place to stitch but the vet has punctured some of the skin around it and slightly stretched it to cover the hole. apart from her tail bending slightly to the right it's looking good.
Lunar is such a sweet thing and is coping really well. She is eating and drinking normally and climbing around her tank as before.
At the moment she is asleep under the kitchen towel in her tank which is strange because she used to do that every night when she was a baby.
The vet I go to is absolutely brilliant, she's specialised in reptiles and keeps Beardies herself so I trust her completely and Lunar seems to like her too.
I will post when I get the pathology results.

Hi Terri,

Thank you for your posts and I'm so glad Lunar is doing well :)

How wonderful about your vet. That makes such a difference doesn't it.

Fingers crossed for the results for you and hope Lunar carries on convalescing well.

Thinking of you!

Hi Catherine.
Lunar is still doing well. She is eating as much as she did before, running around her tank and climbing her log.
No news yet about the results but I'm sure if it was anything to worry about they would have contacted me by now.
Siuna is brilliant with reptiles. She treated Button when he had the tumour in his belly. When he passed away I rang the vets to let them know and she rang me back to see if I was ok. She was really upset that we'd lost him. It makes such a difference to have a vet that you can trust.

I'm looking foreward to bathing Lunar again because she is going through a major shed and she cant rub her skin against anything. I've removed everything she could use to scratch her stitches and I also clipped her nails as I noticed she could get to them with her right foot. She is such a cheeky little thing and looks like she's in a sulk the whole time. Hopefully she will have healed enough when she has her check up to be able to have a good soak.

Solar is fine but he doesn't like the fact he can't play out with Lunar. Breeding has been put on hold until I know she's ok.
He is head bobbing frantically every time he sees her and she responds to him It's such a shame cos they were getting on really well.
Hopefully I should have some news about the results tomorrow.

Hi Terri,

That's good news :)

I know what you mean about having a vet who cares. When some of mine have been very sick my vet took them home with her, rather than leave them at the surgery. On more than one occasion she has called me, in tears, to tell me that they didn't make it. It doesn't ease the pain but it does let you know that they couldn't be in better hands.

It sounds like Lunar is in the best hands possible.

I've had one Beardie who had some pretty major surgery on his tail. He healed very quickly. If they are going to get something it's probably one of the best locations on the body to get it.

Given the location it's possible that it could have been one of the femoral pores that got infected and led to a cyst. One of my girls had this happen. The pores sometimes get plugged up and that leads to infection. It usually tends to happen around breeding season, so the timing is right. Just a thought.

Let us know what the lab finds.

best regards,
Mark

Hi
Got the results on Lunars growth tonight.
It was an epidermal cyst. I was so worried that it was something nasty.
The vet was so pleased with her progress that she doesn't have to see her for 2 weeks unless we have any problems. She's going to decide then whether to remove the stitches.
I gave her a soak in the bath earlier and she really enjoyed it. I had to use a tiny baby toothbrush to clean away the dried blood.
It's looking very clean and the skin is starting to shed around it.
She looks happy enough and has only lost 18 gramms which is great considering what she's been through.
